I have a room that can be used!

Hosting is when someone accommodates a refugee, migrant, or person seeking asylum as a ‘guest’ in a spare room in their own home. The guest does not pay rent, and it is up to the host as to how long they can accommodate a guest - it could be for just a few weeks, or much longer. Hosts agree on their own living arrangements with their guests, such as whether you will share meals or not.
Hosting provides vital stable and safe short-term accommodation for refugees, and a wonderfully practical way of welcoming people to the UK and breaking down cultural barriers through friendship and support. Since the launch of the government's Homes for Ukraine Scheme in March 2022, there has been a significant recent growth of public interest in hosting refugees. There are however many organisations that have years of experience operating hosting projects for refugees and asylum seekers. The need remains high for hosts who are willing to offer space in their home to refugees and asylum seekers from all backgrounds.

Our online platform enables you to be referred to local hosting projects. There are many excellent programmes across the country through which people host refugees in their own home. In partnership with NACCOM (The No Accommodation Network) Welcome Homes will connect you with a local hosting project based on what you are able to offer and the current need in your area. NACCOM is the UK-wide No Accommodation Network of over 140 organisations seeking to prevent destitution amongst people seeking asylum, refugees, and migrants with no recourse to public funds (NRPF).

We strongly recommend that you read through these useful hosting guides produced by NACCOM (Guide 1, Guide 2) to find out more information about hosting good practice which will help you consider whether hosting is right for you and your family. We would recommend that at least Guide 1, which covers key considerations for prospective hosts, is read before completing the referral form.

Supported lodging is when someone accommodates a refugee, who is able to pay rent whilst being accommodated. This can be for a short or long time, depending what is agreed by the parties involved. Usually it happens between people who already know each other – for example between people in the same church who become aware of a person needing accommodation through their friendship. We have created a guide to help people consider the different aspects involved in offering supported lodging.

What if I am interested in hosting Ukrainian refugees?
We strongly encourage hosts to be open and willing to host refugees and people seeking asylum from all backgrounds. Every year, approximately 3,000 people face homelessness and destitution because of their immigration status, so the need for accommodation support is substantial for those already in the asylum system in the UK, as well as new arrivals.
Reset and Refugees at Home are the primary national organisations we are working with, involved in hosting Ukrainians. If you would like to host Ukrainians refugees, you can either complete our referral form to choose to be connected with Refugees at Home, or you can visit Reset’s website to register your interest as a host with them.
Refugees at Home is a UK-wide hosting service for those with a free room to offer to destitute people seeking asylum and newly granted refugees at risk of homelessness. Refugees at Home is also a recognised provider for the Government’s Homes for Ukraine Scheme, and is matching new Ukrainian guests in need of UK sponsors. Most hosts are in England but there are many placements in other locations across the UK. Hosts are particularly needed in larger towns and cities.
Reset Communities and Refugees runs a government-recognised Homes for Ukraine matching service, connecting Ukrainian refugees living outside the UK with sponsors all over the country. Reset provides training and support for new sponsors so they are better able to navigate their hosting journey before they are matched, giving them a better understanding of how to work with refugees in a meaningful and empowering way.
